Just what is Kit?
In MUD2 you will hear a lot of people talking about kit. Good kit, bad kit. What kit you need to kill someone, to do something etc - and with a land full of objects, kit is something to be thinking about. For the purposes of this page, I'll be covering basic kit. Basic kit includes weapons, objects of use and containers. I'll look at each area individually.
WEAPONS (WP)
Usually the first thing a new player will want is a weapon (aka WP). Weapons are good, they allow you to kill things and hit things with - and no matter how good you get, a weapon is always going to be something you want. The land is full of weapons, and usually if you wander long enough you will find one - sometimes a couple. So, lets look at some easy to find weapons and some commands worth remembering:
Sticks and stones may break my bones...
If you are really stuck for a weapon, then the land is littered with sticks, and the stony beach (west of the railway line) is full of pebbles which can be used as weapons.
...but axes and knives excite me!
It is probably best to learn the starting points of a few weapons in the land, so you can always easily locate one. The Gardens, north of Dally Lane contain both the Halberd and Falchion start off there. Also littered about the land is the dagger, the staff, the blade, the billhook and other axes.
If you are still struggling to find a weapon, you could also try going to other places to get one. The Longsword is a fickle weapon and can be found dotted about the land - although retrieving it may prove difficult. There are knives in the Goblin Lair, but you'll have to first prise them out of the Goblin's sticky little fingers - and some weapons are treasure, but you'll have to know how to solve the puzzle guarding them first! (or just where to find them :)
Once you have a weapon of sorts, you can do a few things with it. You can weigh it, to find out how heavy it is (and also how much it is going to weigh you down), you can find out what kind of weapon it is - by asking the game - eg:
*is falchion a dagger?
is falchion a dagger?
No.
*is falchion a sword?
is falchion a sword?
No.
*is falchion an axe?
is falchion an axe?
Yes.
You can ask if what you are carrying is a weapon as well:
*is baton a weapon?
is baton a weapon?
No.
*is Falchion a weapon?
is Falchion a weapon?
Yes.
Weapons require repair as well as they take damage when they are used, whether you are using it during a fight or to break something. To repair it, you could ask a friendly magic user to repair your weapon (remember and tell them what you are carrying!) or you could locate the stable and hit your weapon on the anvil, which will magically return your weapon to original strength and use. It's also a good idea to look at your weapon from time to time, as this will tell you what condition your weapon is in, and whether or not you need to get it repaired (if you don't repair it, it will fall apart).
OTHER USEFUL THINGS...
As I've already said, the land is full of items that you can use to enhance your game. As it goes, a lot are puzzle bound - meaning you have to work out their use by yourself, but for here, lets look at the simple things to help your game along.
KEYS (K) - The use of keys is fairly obvious :) The land has a lot of locked doors, and some locked containers - and there are a lot of keys lying about the land, it's just a case of finding which key opens which lock! Some keys open more than one lock, and some are more useful than others. It's just all a matter of trial and error.
Wafers (WF) - Wafers are little biscuits that help restore your stamina. There are quite a few of them lying about the land, but you'll find that all the really good ones are snapped up within the first few minutes of the reset. The ones that are left are usually 50 series wafers (as can be seen if you have ID on) and are only useful for lower levels.
There are a lot of other useful items, especially for those who gain magic... but those, you will just have to work out yourselves :) To find out about a few other items of kit, locate the LIBRAM (usually in the study, in the cottage) and read it.
CONTAINERS
As previously discussed on the STATS page, carrying a lot of kit can lower your DEX. To get by this problem - containers come in useful. There are quite a few containers in the land. (Most) Boats double up as containers, there is also a bag, and a variety of boxes which you can carry around and put your things into.
It's a good idea once you decide to use a container to find out the pros and cons about it - will it be destroyed by water, will it protect its contents from getting wet if you drown, is it heavy, can you eat directly from it, how much will it hold etc. Once you get to grips with this, you can decide which containers are best.
